Speakers Michael and Kaila Jacques

Public Speaker, Activist & Author

Hear how Michael wrote his book – even though he can’t read or write – and how Kaila supported him through its creation, showing the power of design to amplify voices.

Michael Jacques wrote and self-published Can’t Read, Can’t Write, Here’s My Book using speech-to-text technology. At a young age, Michael was diagnosed with autism and an intellectual disability. His story demonstrates the empowerment that comes from being comfortable in your own skin, knowing your strengths, valuing relationships and giving back to your community. Michael sits on the board of Community Living Ontario, where he advocates for others with disabilities, works at Sobeys and competes as a Special Olympic athlete.

Kaila Jacques is a multi-disciplinary designer who cares deeply about creating a more inclusive society. At RallyRally, she leads her team in projects that amplify the powerful work of organizations through strategy and design. Some clients include UNICEF, United Way and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Previously, Kaila worked at Bruce Mau Design. She works closely with her brother to support his book and looks to change the narrative around what it means to be different.
